Thermostat changeover for seasons

(related column topic links - 453)

This time of the year, it can be chilly enough at night and in the morning for the furnace to come on. It can also get warm enough in the afternoon that you open your windows or your central air conditioner may even come on. Computerized thermostats with automatic changeover can cause this to happen.

This auto changeover is great for comfort, but bad for your utility bills. Set the thermostat to cool only during this time of the year or set the heating temperature very low to keep the furnace from coming on. Just wearing a sweater or sweat shirt in the morning for an hour or two will eliminate the need for the furnace to kick on.
