Turn off stove pilot light

(related column topic links - 612)

If you have a gas range and there are one or two burners that you do not often use, turn off the pilot lights to those burners. Pilot lights use quite a bit of gas over an entire year. Pilot lights also produce heat and moisture in the summer that your air conditioner must run longer to remove.

It is not difficult to shut off the pilot. This usually involved closing a small valve that stops the flow of gas to the pilot light. The exact procedure depends on your specific brand. Check your owner's manual or call your stove dealer. It is important to make sure that it is totally shut off.
