Dulley's Money-Saving Tip #1107

Wash dishes by hand

This tip was contributed by Christina Manship. Thank you.

My husband and I do not have a dishwasher, nor do we want one. Dishwashers take a lot of water to clean the dishes and sometimes they don't even get thoroughly cleaned.

While I was doing the dishes just the other day, I realized how much water I waste by running the water the entire time as I have seen it done by many other people. They run the water in one side of the sink while they wash the dishes in the other. People think that it is faster and easier to run the water the entire time that they are doing the dishes.

Well, I tried it the other way. First, I washed all of my dishes, then I put them in a tub (dishwashing tubs, like Rubbermaid offers). After I was done, I rinsed my dishes and let them air dry. This way, I don't use nearly as much water. And, by letting the dishes air dry, it saves on our laundry bills for towels too.
