Dulley's Money-Saving Tip #1103

Check for gaps where ceiling fan mounts

(related column topic links - (462, 886, 904)

Take a look at your ceiling paddle fans that are mounted in the ceiling below the attic. You may see some gaps around the various parts of it or you may not. Even if you do not, most ceiling fans allow a lot of air leakage up into the attic. Most are supported by a one-inch hollow metal tube that is open to the attic and a ball swivels loosely in a socket..

The only effective method to seal this area is to build a small wooded box to cover the fan mounting area in the attic. It should not be very high so that you can easily cover it with plenty of insulation. Make sure to caulk where the box rests on the attic floor.
