Dulley's Money-Saving Tip #1078

Clean indoor evaporator coils

(related column topic links - (763, 921)

It is very important when air-conditioning to keep the air conditioner coils clean. Even if you regularly change the furnace filter, dust and dirt can still build up on the cooling coils. This is because the coils are wet as they condense water out of the air as they cool the air and the dirt sticks to it. This dirt will insulate the coils and impede the air flow through them.

Make sure your serviceman cleans the coils when your furnace and central air conditioner are serviced. If not, it is not difficult to do on some models. Turn off the electricity to the blower unit. There is usually an access panel that you can remove. When you remove the panel, you will be able to quickly see if you have access to clean the coil. Use your vacuum cleaner brush attachment to clean it.
