Dulley's Money-Saving Tip #1072

Check caulk along bathtub

(related column topic links - (862, 937)

Check the condition of the caulk along the top edge of your bathtub. If it is cracked or missing in any spots, the moisture, especially when showering, can get through to the wall. Over time, this can cause significant and expensive damage to the wall.

To repair it, it is best to scrape out all the caulk, even some of the caulk that still looks sound. A narrow-bladed screwdriver works well for this task. Vacuum out all the loose pieces and then clean the area with alcohol. This removes soap and scum residue. Let it dry and apply a heavy beam of tub caulking. Drip your finger in some water and smooth out the bead.
