Water beds use a lot of electricity

(related column topic links - (425)

Although water beds are not as popular as they used to be, there are still a lot of them out there. People do not realize that it can cost more than $100 per year for the electricity to keep the water bed warm. Some of this can be offset by setting the furnace thermostat down at night since the water bed heater should keep you warm. In the summer, there is a double cost because your air conditioner is trying to cool your house and your water bed is losing heat to your house.

Here are a couple of tips to cut the electricity usage. Cover the water bed with a one-thick piece of foam under the sheet. You will still have the water support through it. The foam piece insulates the water bed to reduce heat loss. It also separates your body from the water so you can set its temperature lower without feeling chilly. During the day, make sure you keep it covered with a well-insulated quilt.
