Dulley's Money-Saving Tip #1051

Install foam draft sealers

(related column topic links - 602, 937)

Installing inexpensive foam draft sealers behind electrical faceplates can reduce much of the air leakage into your home. It is really only necessary to put them behind electrical faceplates on exterior walls. Put your hand down near an electrical outlet on a windy day and you will be surprise at the amount of air blowing out from it. For $10, you can easily do an entire house.

Some of the sealer kits come with the plastic cap to stick in the outlet slots. These are really more useful for safety around children than they are for sealing air leakage. If you can find a package of foam sealers without the plastic caps, buy it and save a few bucks.
