Dulley's Money-Saving Tip #1045

Check and balance duct dampers

(related column topic links - 589)

Check the dampers in the ducts leading to the rooms of your house. The dampers are usually located in the main ducts near the furnace. Make sure that they are opened completely. Lining up the small handle in the direction of the duct is usually the open position. Your furnace will operate more efficiently with all of the dampers opened for the maximum air flow.

Wait several several hours and check to see if any rooms are too warm. If they are, close the duct damper leading to those rooms a little. Wait another hour for the temperature to stabilize and check the temperatures again. You will eventually get the rooms to the comfortable temperature that you desire and still have adequate air flow through the furnace.
