By keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold, it unnecessarily wastes electricity. The recommended temperature is 38 to 40 degrees for the fresh food compartment of the refrigerator. The recommended temperature for the freezer compartment is 5 degrees. If you have a separate freezer for long-term food storage, it should kept at 0 to -5 degrees.

Make sure your refrigerator door seal is airtight. Test it by closing the door over a piece of paper or a dollar bill so it is half in and half out. If you can pull the paper out easily, the latch may need to be adjusted or the seals need to be replaced.
