Hardy Biennial. Dramatic spikes of rosette-like, single or double flowers are produced in summer and early autumn. Water and feed heavily during growing season. These may be perennial, but are best grown as biennials. The blooms are available in a wide range of colors of yellow, white, rose, red, cranberry, purple or nearly black. The blossoms may appear as single, semi-double or double. They are easy to grow. Rust and spider mites can become serious problems, but if you dust rust-infected plants with sulphur and control mites with insecticidal soap spray you should have no more worries. Great when used as a background plant in borders, against walls and fences and for cut flowers. The flowers open in progression from the bottom up, with a foot or two of the stem covered in bloom at any one time.
