Half-hardy Annual. This large and impressive annual is grown for its large, decorative, leaves and spiny seed pods which appear in the summer. Ideally used as specimen plants in borders, bedding and containers. They add stature and architecture to any garden. You must take care when planting this giant as the seeds are poisonous. 'Zanzibarensis' is the giant variety in this family which grows to a towering height and 'Mizuma' is the most compact variety available which grows to a height of about 3 feet. Perennial in Zones 8-11.
