Hardy Annual. P. somniferum is the source of the culinary poppy seed which is often used in bread and pastry making. The fruits and the sap, however, are poisonous so care must be taken to plant this selection away from where children play. A highly ornamental and useful plant also with white, deep purple, royal pink and red blooms which form large dried seed pods. The seeds may be shaken from the dried pods and then the pods may be used in dried arrangements or Christmas decorations.
