Half-hardy Annual. Large, airy flower stalks covered with tiny, papery, funnel-shaped flowers in lavender-blue, lemon, creamy yellow, blue, white, or pink. Leathery, wide evergreen leaves. Needs good drainage, as it is susceptible to fungal diseases prevalent in moist soils. Prefers part-shade in southern areas. Tolerates drought, heat and salt sprays. Harvest before flowers are fully open in order to dry. Plant seeds in late fall or early spring. For warmer climates there is L. perezii which may be grown in Zones 9-11.
