Hardy Annual. Clarkia is an important flower for the cutting bed as it will last a very long time if the flowers are cut while still in bud. Will grow in average light garden soil with plenty of sun. When sowing seeds, remember that they are very fine and need to be barely covered with sowing medium. Seed catalogues offer only double-flowered varieties, available in shades of salmon, pink, mauve, rose, carmine, purple, red or white, but occasionally single-flowered varieties, like the wild flower, appear among the seedlings. Clarkias are among the most beautiful of western wild flowers and deserve a place in any garden that can meet their rather special needs. Clarkias thrive in the cool summers and dry, sandy loam found in mountainous areas of the West. They grow well in full sun or partial shade, and bloom most profusely where the soil is rather low in nitrogen. They make long-lasting, decorative cut flowers.
