A highly ornamental annual vine grown for its puffed seeds pods which look like little green paper balloons. It has twining tendrils and 2-inch leaves with finely cut leaflets. The inconspicuous white flowers are followed by ornamental fruit that appears in the fall. The seed pods are papery, green and balloon shaped; an inch in diameter. The pods are filled with black seeds which are each marked with a heart-shaped spot where it was attached to the pod. This is the origin of its common name. It makes a lightweight, fast-growing cover for trellises, arches, posts or wire fences.
