Twice I have returned home from a week long vacation to find water damage on the ceiling and floor of my kitchen on the main floor, but no water stains on the upper floor or in the attic. I turned off the water supply to the washer on the upper floor as well as the valves to the toilets and sinks. The first time, the water had dried by the time I returned home and was associated with an intense thunderstorm. This second time (15 monthes later), the water was actively leaking on my return, but stopped spontaneously within 24 hours despite continuing rain. The ceiling was opened, and revealed mold and dark staining of the subfloor with evidence of staining on the air vent. Everything is now dry. A plumber and contractor have no ideas about the cause. Any ideas would be appreciated.
