: The shingles on the front section of houses on one side of the street are discolored---looks like mildew has set-in deeply. However, I've noticed on my side at the back of my house the shingles are also becoming spotted. What causes this, and what/if any thing can be done to clean them up? Thanks.

It is microscopic algae spores carried by the wind. There is a do it yourself spray to clean the roof. It is only temporary. To keep your roof clean you need to have zinc strips installed on the roof to kill the spores and stop the black spots from forming again.
