You made a lot of good points regarding the front-loading machines. I have one and it cleans very well. I always use the second rinse when I use bleach, as on rinse cycle doesn't take all the smell out.
One thing you didn't mention in the article is that the front-loading machines cost a whole lot more than the top loaders and they take twice as long to do a load. My whitest white cycle takes 73 minutes. It can take all day long to do the washing for a family. So you save money on water and detergent, but spend way more time doing the wash.
