A sand point is a bottom strainer used on shallow wells driven in sold sandy soils. The problem is the initial quality of the water. You have iron, probably more likely iron algae, and vegitation run off like leaves giving you hydrogen sulfide.
About the only solution is a really good water softner like a Kenetco, and iron out salt.
